In the 80’s, if your dress code was “all black” with heavy makeup, then of course you were probably into a label called 4AD.
4AD had some of the best artists of that time, so good you were willing to pay import prices, and “Dead Can Dance” is certainty at the top of anyone’s favorite 4AD bands. DCD is a couple of Aussie’s, Lisa Gerrard and Brendan Perry, and you’ve heard Lisa before on tons of sound tracks, probably most famously on Ridley Scott’s Gladiator (2000). She has an amazing voice, and DCD helped fuel the goth scene of the 1980’s.
The only official recording of their live music is in a film called “Towards The Within,” a concert recorded at the Mayfair Theatre in Santa Monica, California in November 1993. The film also contains interviews of Lisa Gerrard and Brendan Perry.
Anyway, someone spliced up the entire “Towards The Within” recording and put it on youtube. It’s in 10 parts, about 10 minutes each. The splicing’s a bit jagged, but I’ve sequentially reconstructed the series below as best I could. Enjoy!
