New Yorkers have a special look – disheveled, usually.
Like most new arrivals, I never understood this . . . until one day, I realized -- this special look? It’s
a uniform: unkempt hair, clothes that missed their Sunday wash, food crumbs,
cigarettes . . . These people have jobs, true. But their real job – it’s livin’ in
this town man. The New Yorkers you see on the street? They're not
brusque– they’re
working: queued up in the deli, getting coffee,
trying to cross 7th Avenue, riding the subway, reading the paper - don’t
bother ’em man, they’re on the job.
This portfolio/journal/site – it’s a record of what
I’ve accomplish while I've been on the job . . .
There is a vitality, a life force, a quickening that is translated through you into action, It is not your business to determine how good it is ... it is your business to keep it yours clearly and directly, to keep the channel open. You do not even have to believe in yourself or your work. You have to keep open and aware directly to the urges that motivate you. Keep the channel open. ~ Martha Graham (American Dancer and Choreographer, 1894-1991).
